This conference is taking place in the context of the French Presidency of the G20 ; indeed, France has asked the EESC to provide an input for the forthcoming meeting of G20 Agriculture Ministers which takes place on 22-23 June. The conference will serve to prepare a set of recommendations that will form the Committee’s contribution to the G20 Agriculture Ministers’ meeting.

INVITATION

The number of undernourished and chronically hungry people has reached close to 1 billion. Soaring food and fuel prices threaten to destabilise the world economy. They are also cause for severe economic, political and social concern in a number of developing countries.

How can we avoid the present situation escalating into a food crisis as was witnessed in 2007-08 and how do we secure affordability for the most vulnerable and accessibility of healthy nutrition for all ?

What role does the market mechanism have in this context ? Is the answer to the problem a new green revolution ? Or more regulation ? Is food aid holding back investment in improving agricultural productivity in developing countries ? What role do the EU’s agricultural, trade and development policies play ?

I am delighted to invite you to an international conference on global food security :

FOOD FOR EVERYONE – TOWARDS A GLOBAL DEAL organised by the European Economic and Social Committee,
in cooperation with the European Commission
to take place in the EESC Jacques Delors building in Brussels
on Monday 23 May 2011 from 9.30 a.m. until 6.30 p.m.

The EESC, as the only EU body representing employers, employees and other civil society organisations, seeks to promote not only dialogue and participation but also solidarity and development. The Committee therefore attaches particular importance to food security issues and has prepared and adopted several opinions on the global food challenge.

The French G20 Presidency has made food security one of its key political priorities.
Food security issues play an equally important role in the agricultural, trade and development policies designed by the European Commission.

France, as the country holding the G20 Presidency, has asked the EESC to provide an input for the forthcoming meeting of G20 Agriculture Ministers which takes place on 22-23 June.
The conference on 23 May will serve to prepare a set of recommendations that will form the Committee’s contribution to the G20 Agriculture Ministers’ meeting.

Guest speakers will include key politicians and decision makers, high-ranking policy makers from the European institutions, leading figures and widely recognised experts from international organisations, as well as high level representatives of civil society from the developing countries.

The conference will consist of plenary-type sessions, where the focus will be on food security as a global challenge, as well as four specific workshops. The first workshop will look at the functioning of global agricultural markets, whilst the second will deal with food security as a right. The third workshop will discuss the need for coherence between different policy sectors and, lastly, the fourth will address food security in developing countries. Around 200 participants are expected to attend the conference : decision-makers, EU officials, public officials and representatives of non-governmental organisations.

The Committee attaches particular importance to food security issues and has prepared and adopted several opinions on the global food challenge. This conference is a milestone for us, and we want the discussions to start before 23 May and continue afterwards. Therefore, I’m inviting you to engage in the debates that are already taking place on our online platform dedicated to this conference and to our vision : Food for everyone-towards a global deal ! Post your contribution or just tell us your opinion on this global challenge at http://eesc.europa.eu/food-for-everyone/.

I will take care that your input is taken on board of the discussions on 23 May.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the EESC secretariat :

I look forward to welcoming you to Brussels on 23 May.

Yours sincerely,
